Could we do it on a Tuesday night in Stoke?
It being — park somewhere fairly close and get away without getting caught in traffic.
We'd done (some) research on this one, and put our trust in a Reddit post that mentioned Heron Cross as a great place to park if you want to get out quickly. It was a school night, so we needed to get out quickly.
As for the research — we’d looked at parking, but hadn't worked out where to eat. We knew there was a fan zone, but it wasn't clear whether we'd be allowed in.
We had a bit of time on our hands, so we took a detour into Hanley, which is known for its restaurants. We drove around the ring road (Potteries Way) at least twice — because we didn't know where we were going, and you can't see what's inside the ring road as you drive around it.
By the time we'd eaten, we weren't in a rush, but we didn't have time to mess about.
We parked at a local business in Heron Cross — £7 cash.
We had the maps app open for the route to the ground, but didn't need it as we could see Stoke fans walking up the street. We followed them. The route takes you over the A50 via a distinctive green footbridge. On the other side, you turn right and follow a path all the way to the stadium. There's an underpass with Stoke graffiti right before you arrive.
The first thing we saw (and heard) was the fan zone — the Boothen Quarter. It had live music, food and drink.
Outside the fan zone were several decent looking food stalls. All available to away fans.
We would've chosen to eat at one of these, had we known they were there. Our little expedition into Hanley had cost us an hour at least (there's not much margin for error for evening games). Annoying — we won't make that mistake again.
The quickest way to the away end was via the east side of the stadium. But it was blocked off. So, we had to walk all the way round (we were directed out onto the streets) to get to the away entrance.
Away fans have to enter via one walkway, which is quite narrow. The queue was long.
"Dad, I need the toilet".
"Out of 10, if 10 is the worst, how much do you need to go to the toilet?"
"8"
It took 20 minutes to get in.
After the game, we were funnelled out the way we’d come in. Which wasn’t the way we wanted to go. This meant we had to find a different way back to the path alongside the A50 (we ended up scrambling through bushes at the Holiday Inn).
As we walked back to the car, we could see the local traffic backed up, as everyone tried to leave the industrial estate at the same time. This was why we parked further out. The plan was working, so far.
There was a queue in Heron Cross to get back onto the A50, but this only slowed us by a few minutes. We could do it on a Tuesday night in Stoke.
Looking back, we learned a few things for next time.
On the face of it, if you look for restaurants near the bet365, it's in a food desert. But there's decent food available outside the ground. It's just not promoted.
The Heron Cross parking hack worked. Yes, the trade-off was 2 x 20-minute walks, but this was far better than sitting in the car wondering when we’d be able to move.
