Away-day guide

Swansea City

Swansea.com Stadium, the Swans.

Quick takeaways

  • Out of town location
  • The nearby retail park has a few food options, but you can't park there
  • Decent stewarded matchday parking within 20 minutes

About the place

The Swansea.com stadium sits two miles north of the city centre, on the banks of the River Tawe. It’s just over 1.5 miles from the station.

It is a newer (opened in 2005), fully enclosed stadium with a modern feel.

Next door is the Morfa Shopping Park, predominantly a shopping destination, but with a few food options.

This is one of the furthest away days for many fans, so whether you're making a day of it, or looking to get in and out as fast as possible, it's worth having a plan.

Away fans are housed in the lower section of the North Stand.

Getting in & out

By train

Train

Swansea is the nearest station. However, it's a good mile and a half from the ground. Depending on the weather, you might consider getting a taxi or Uber closer to the ground.

Felindre Park & Ride

Park and ride

The Felindre Park and Ride is a matchday-only facility for events at the Swansea.com Stadium. The site provides a shuttle service directly to the stadium.

The service begins 2.5 hours before kick-off and ends up to two hours after the final whistle. It typically costs £10 per vehicle, which includes the bus fare for passengers.

The return journey picks up from outside Rossi's Fish & Chips on Neath Road, to the North end of the stadium.

Llangyfelach, Swansea SA5 7PE — just off Junction 46 of the M4.

Section 03

Parking

Parking options

Don't try to park at the nearby Morfa Retail Park. Matchday parking isn’t allowed, and the standard free parking limit is often reduced on matchdays. The only way to park in that area is to pre-book a space at the Morrisons via JustPark. Although this sells out quickly.

The stadium has limited onsite parking available. The club website has a link to book through JustPark.

A limited number of spaces are reserved for away disabled supporters in the North Car Park. Book in advance via your own club system, or contact Swansea City at: accessibility@swanseacity.com

There is a drop-off point at the south-west corner of the stadium.

Notes

There's a path from here that takes you along the river towards the ground. The car park usually opens around three hours before kick-off and closes one hour after full-time. One of the main advantages is its location, which is better for getting back on the M4. 15-20 minutes to the ground.

Matchday road closures

The following local roads are closed for up to an hour after the full-time whistle:

  • A4067 up to the roundabout with Cwm Level Road.
  • A4217 up to the roundabout over the river.
  • A section of Brunel Way (up to the junction with Alamein Road).
  • A section of the B4603 Neath Road.

Post-match traffic

Expect delays after the game on all major routes away from the stadium. The roads out to the M4 can be slow. As always, the closer you park to the stadium, the slower it will be to leave.

Section 04

Food & drink

If you're hitting the city centre first, you'll find everything you need. Wind Street (pronounced Wined) has loads of pubs and restaurants.

Near the stadium, the Morfa Shopping Park has a Nando's / McDonald's / KFC.

Closer to the stadium

Founders & Co

24 Wind St, Swansea SA1 1DY

A highly-rated food hall with a range of street food options from tacos to pizza and curry.

Burger Freakz

29 Mansel St, Swansea SA1 5SQ

Very highly rated place, nominated for Best Burger in the UK prize at the British Burger Awards. No surprise — it can get busy.

Thai Chef food truck

In the car park near Morrisons, Morfa Shopping Park

If you want something different, try the highly-rated Thai Chef food truck in the car park near Morrisons. Look for the Thai flag. They sell out fast, so if you're looking for something close to kick-off, you'll be choosing from what's left. When we visited, they only took cash (there's a cash point at Morrisons).

Harvester Morfa Parc

Morfa Shopping Park, Brunel Way, Plasmarl, Swansea, SA1 2FB

A popular, family-friendly venue in the retail park next door to the stadium. On busy days it runs a pop-up cans bar outside to reduce queues.

The Station Inn

16-22 Hamilton Street, Plasmarl, Swansea, SA1 2QJ

Very welcoming local pub with live sports and pool table. Live music and karaoke too.

Pump House

Pump House Quay, Maritime Quarter, Swansea SA1 1TT

A historic waterfront pub situated in a beautifully restored old pump house. It offers a large outdoor patio area with scenic marina views, great food, and a relaxed, welcoming environment for traveling fans.

The Olde Cross Keys

12 St Mary Street, Swansea, SA1 3LH

Historic pub dating back to the 1300s, just off Wind Street. With a beer garden and live sports.

BeerRiff Brewing Co

Pilot House Wharf, Maritime Quarter, Swansea, SA1 1UN

A microbrewery and craft beer bar in the marina, serving pre-match pints, artisan pizzas, and a relaxed atmosphere.

No Sign Bar

56 Wind St, Swansea SA1 1EG

Established in 1690, the No Sign Bar is worth a visit in its own right. The name comes from an old licensing quirk. As a wine bar rather than a public house, it wasn't required to display a sign, and the title stuck. It was a regular haunt of Dylan Thomas, and the place still has real character. Multiple CAMRA award winner, with real ales, ciders, and home-cooked food. Gets busy on matchdays.

Section 05

The away end

The away end is good, as you're behind the goal with a clear view of the game. Swansea's singing section is to your left in the East Stand, so expect some decent back and forth.

The facilities are modern and accessible, as you would expect from a stadium that is only 20-ish years old.

If you're sitting in the front rows on a hot sunny day, you'll bake — so take sunscreen.

Our visits

Sometimes the football schedule throws up a combo that can't be ignored.

Swansea away. August. Saturday 3pm.

BEACH.

We parked up at the beach at 12:15pm. This gave us a good hour for a kickabout, before heading to the stadium.

Swansea Beach is huge, and we found our own space to kick a ball around without bothering anyone else.

The youngest asked if he could go and put his feet in the water.

"Go for it. Only up to your knees though, remember we haven't got a towel, or spare clothes"

"Ok dad"

We marked out a football tennis court in the sand, and played for a few minutes.

Looked over and saw the youngest in up to his waist. That’s the shorts soaked then. Shouted to him to go no further. Thumbs up from him.

A minute later, he’s bloody paddling around in the surf. That’s him soaked for the next few hours. He didn’t care.

We left the beach and headed for the matchday parking site. We followed the flow of people out of the car park and along the river towards the stadium. On our left was the Morfa Shopping Park. It was 2pm: time to grab some late lunch.

We’d seen that there was a highly-rated Thai food van in the car park at the shopping centre. Thai Green Curry beats stadium food all day long.

When we got there, we saw it was cash only. I legged it over to Morrisons to use the cash machine. Ran back, cash in hand. There was a sign listing what they had left. Nothing that the kids wanted.

Instead of smashing a Thai curry, we ended up with the consolation prize of a hot dog in the stadium.

Inside the ground, our seats were in the front row. My eldest got hit by a stray ball during the warm up. He thought it was funny, and he got an apology from the player who’d spooned it at him.

The sun was blazing down, so the youngest had dried out by half-time. He also got burnt to a crisp. All things considered, we probably wouldn’t sit down the front again.

This is still one of our favourite away days, talked about a lot. And the only one where we've swam in the sea before kick-off. Yet.

We're hoping that the schedule doesn't put us down there on a Tuesday night next season.

If you've got more time

  • Swansea Beach — it’s right on the doorstep to the city, and worth building into your day, especially in the warmer months. Perfect for a bit of beach footy — just remember to put a football in the car
  • The Mumbles for the views, food and drink — a beautiful seaside village a couple of miles along the bay, with independent restaurants and pubs. The seafront walk alone is worth it
  • Wind Street for pre-/post-match food and drink — bustling street with loads of pubs, bars and restaurants. By night, it's got a younger crowd, but for sheer volume of options it's hard to beat
